According to the latest news, the Delhi High Court will suspend the implementation of the central government’s notice on limiting the use of herbicide glyphosate for three months.

The court instructed the central government to review the judgment together with relevant units, and take the proposed solution as a part of the judgment. During this period, the notice of “restricted use” of glyphosate will not take effect.

Background of “restricted use” of glyphosate in India

Previously, the notice issued by the central government on October 25, 2022 mentioned that glyphosate could only be used by pest control operators (PCOs) because of its potential problems to human and animal health. Since then, only PCO holding a license to use lethal chemicals against rodents and other pests can apply glyphosate.

Mr. Harish Mehta, Technical Advisor of the Indian Crop Care Federation, told Krishak Jagat that “CCFI was the first defendant to go to court for breaking the rules on the use of glyphosate. The glyphosate has been used for decades and has no adverse impact on crops, human beings or the environment. This provision goes against the interests of farmers. ”

Mr. Durgesh C Sharma, Secretary General of the Indian Crop Life Organization, told Krishak Jagat, “Considering the infrastructure of the country’s PCO, the decision of the Delhi High Court is favorable. The restrictions on the use of glyphosate will greatly affect small farmers and marginal farmers. “
